Review: Wide Awake by Shelly Crane

I saw this book on a fellow bloggers post for the blog tour. Had it not been for the post I read, I would have never pick up Wide Awake. It just didn’t seem like my cup of tea and definitely not something I would normally pick up. I’m so happy that I did though.

A girl.
A coma.
A life she can't remember.

When Emma Walker wakes up in the hospital with no knowledge of how she got there, she learns that she's been in a coma for six months. Strangers show up and claim to be her parents, but she can't remember them. She can't remember anyone. Not her friends, not even her boyfriend. Even though she can't remember, everyone wants her to just pick up where she left off, but what she learns about the 'old her' makes her start to wish she'd never woken up. Her boyfriend breaks up with the new girl he's dating to be with her, her parents want her to start planning for college, her friends want their leader back, and her physical therapist with the hazel eyes keeps his distance to save his position at the hospital.

Will she ever feel like she recognizes the girl in the mirror?

Wow. This book simply blew me away. The story had so many levels and you couldn’t help but fall for the characters.

Emma was a great perspective to hear from. As she tried to find her way back into her normal life, we were right along with her in not knowing who she was before the coma. She was self-centered, annoying, materialistic, and that rich brat that everyone loves and you hate in high school. The interesting part about Emma’s story is that she gets a second chance unlike many of us. Emma gets a semi-clean state and she has the ability to change her perception of herself and she can chose the path she wants her future to follow. She made the story for me.

Of course, then there is the damaged and ever lovable Mason who literally teaches her to walk again. His kind demeanor and his clearly troubled past make him the best kind of leading man. He helps Emma to transition back into the life of the living and encourages her to be herself (the better version).

While the characters and their development were spot on, so was the plot. It was perfect in terms of pacing and the twists and turns I didn’t see coming. We’re treated to a surprise ending that will literally leave you breathless and I couldn’t put Wide Awake down.

Overall, this story is one of my favorites. I’m going to be reading more of Miss Crane in the future and I encourage you to as well!

9 out of 10

Happy Reading :)

  1. 9 out of 10 wow, wow, wow! I wasn't really interested in it either at first because "coma" plots don't really grab my attention, but I love that the characters are so good! I think I would actually really like this one :D

    1. I honestly don't know why I picked this one up. It didn't seem like my cup of tea but I ended up loving it. It's a really sweet stories and the characters are what make it :)

  2. I recently read a book like this called 'Before I Go To Sleep' where a woman woke up with no memory of her previous life everyday, except that story seems a lot darker than this one. I like the sound of a story about second chances :) Brill review!

    1. I think that's what did it for me. It's a very positive and light hearted book. Yes, there are some dramatic points and some of the characters you do find have a dark side. In the end though, it's a happily ever after, second chance book!
