Fallen by Lauren Kate - Review

I really wanted to like this book. Generally, I'm not a huge fan of the whole angels falling in love with mortals theme in YA fiction. I think the only book that I really truly love about angels is the Mortal Instruments series, but that is a horse of a completely different color...

Fallen is a story about a young girl names Luce who is forced to attend a sort of finishing school for kids with issues. On her first day, she sees Daniel Grigori and there is something familiar about him and an unmistakable draw that has her yearning to speak with him. When she tries to make contact with Daniel, he makes it perfectly clear that he wants nothing to do with her. Of course, this doesn't deter her and she will stop at nothing to figure out what secret he's guarding and it may just kill her.

I was first drawn to this book because of the cover, as stated previously, I'm aself proclaimed "cover-judger"and so I was on Fallen like white on rice. Why the weird metaphors today? I honestly have no clue... it's been one of those days. Needless to say, I was drawn to the book by it's mysterious cover and it's first chapter.

Fallen started off so well for me. I was immediately drawn into the first few pages of the story. I thought it may end up being a period piece set in 1800s London... but sadly I was wrong. Had this been a historical fiction focused on a young Gothic woman and an angel, I could have gotten down on that.

I felt like the story was rushed in places and drug on and on in places as well. I felt a little unbalanced when I was reading it. Don't get me wrong, I liked Kate's writing in general, I think it was the plot that got me. I also figured out what the big surprise was going to be from a mile away. I hate when that happens. I won't pretend to be someone who always guesses the ending of books and movies, but this one made me disappointed.

I also had a problem with the cliffhanger at the end. I have a true love/hate relationship with cliffhangers. I love them and yet I hate having to wait for the next installment of a book. With this one, I felt was rushed and to be honest, it wasn't that exciting. I felt like I didn't get enough information or details to be excited about book 2.

I really hate being overly negative in reviews but for some reason, this one just didn't do it for me. I only really liked two aspects of Fallen: the cover and the first chapter.

  1. I agree with your review. I fell in love with the cover but that was about it. I didn't feel compelled to continue the series. It's been a while since I read the book but I'm pretty sure I found it depressing for some reason...

    1. It was very depressing! I think if the book had matched the cover/first chapter, I would have loved it!

  2. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first book and struggled to really enjoy it. I always judge a book by it's cover unfortunately. Nice review!

  3. I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy this one! I liked it, but I would have to say the second book is much better. And if you'd have liked it to be a "historical-fiction" you should totally read the third book :P Even my friend who didn't like the first agreed that the second was so much better. I don't know– maybe give it a try?

Great review and I'm a new follower! I'm currently having a giveaway on the blog if you'd like to check it out :)

  4. Hey, I was looking aropund of various book blogs for reviews of books that I was thinking about reading for my own blog, and those which have been recommended to me.
I saw this and thought, 'Yes!' Then read it and went, 'Okay, maybe not.' A very truthful review, I appreciate that. Well written.
